Making Of: Hotel Nakati and the Remarkable Night
Hotel Nakati and the Remarkable Night is a unique feature length docufiction that follows those who disobey the universal curfew imposed on us by darkness and seek instead to colonize the night.
The underpinning theme of darkness ties the film together as we follow Alix (***could be male or female***), the film’s protagonist and narrator, through disorienting neo-noir scenes as he frees himself from the limitations of the day and wanders through the night in a quest to invent a new self. The night is magical and filled with anticipation of the unknown.
In the process he rubs shoulders with femme fatales, party monsters, curious scientists, artists, workaholics, doomed lovers, perverts, fighters, politicians, inventors, poets, projectionists writers and other insonmiacs.
The film takes place over the course of one night, under a glowing night sky. As Alix walks down a lonely street he looks up. The blanket of stars only reminds him of his own cosmic insignificance. Under the sky, in the many taverns, hotel rooms, lecture halls, cubicles, research labs and living rooms that populate a city, the scenes are filled with cigarette smoke, ambiguity, fear, cynicism, hope, anguish, romance and erotic anticipation.
These are the people and places that make up the visual fabric of the film. Hotel Nakati and the Remarkable Night is a sort of schizophrenic collage of sounds and images. Alix’s story is not dissimilar to many of our own evenings. It’s one of tormented self-examination. The film is made up of a series of vignettes that curiously and playfully examine day culture, dreams, death, love, light, the universe, stars, sleep and the relationships we conceal using the cloak of darkness.
The lonely twilight haze of the film will be accompanied by a gritty, atmospheric soundscape that caters to our dark urges, full of mysterious energy, grimmey, trippy tones. The sounds of a disorienting dream. Soft rain falling on the sidewalk, a distant thunderstorm and the metallic sounds of the subway barreling through tunnels below our feet at night.
The first hint of morning. The city’s pigeons start to coo and strut. All that is left are abstract clues to what happened the night before. A shoe on the side of the road, an empty wine bottle, a journal filled with new ideas and wet footprints in the sand on an otherwise empty beach. All we are left with are beautiful memories and the knowledge that night will, thankfully, rise again!

1: TRAFFIC GROWTH AND AWARENESS
JANUARY: We re-launched our website. This means we needed to start building traffic up from scratch again. We reached 817 people in one month. We also posted casting notices on popular casting sites resulting in an increase in site traffic. We currently have 127 twitter follows and 80 Facebook fans.
FEBRUARY: This month we published casting notices on popular casting websites (We included a link to our website). We also sent out casting information this month so we had a bump in traffic. We now have 185 facebook followers and 150 twitter followers.
MARCH: March was a difficult month due to a few personal changes (bad knee injury, moving etc). We also changed gears and decided to work on a documentary feature rather than a narrative feature for this year’s project. There was an overall drop in traffic as we focused on non marketing pre-production strategies. We now have 90 facebook followers and 180 twitter followers.
APRIL: Slight increase in traffic. 101 Facebook followers and 186 twitter followers. We had the first round of auditions this month.
